Summer fun in Red Deer

Summer is a long time to be home with young kids.  Young kids who have grown up with ready access to television programming geared to them and portable screens that they can take on the go with them.  As much as we want to send them outside to play or want them to just use their imagination it takes my kids anyways a long time to get into that habit. Throw in needing to do renovations and other activities that are adult only sometimes it can lead to a very impatient momma!

I am so thankful we live in Red Deer.  It's so centrally located and there are so many free and inexpensive activities the kids can participate in, so once the day get started we usually had something to go and do.  I am also glad that Lil man is now old enough to go to the park for short periods of time by himself allowing me to have time at home with Teddy doing other activities.

Discovery Canyon
Discovery Canyon is an outside water feature in Red Deer that has a river run down a slope that kids can go on with tubes and a small swimming area that is maybe 4 feet at the highest point.

My kids being the screen junkies they try to be, were not super pumped about going to Discovery canyon, until we got there. Then because we didn't pack a lunch and had to leave you would think I had asked them to throw away all their toys.  But they did have a great time and it's definitely on our list of places to go each summer.

Rec Center
The Rec Center is the outdoor pool in Red Deer. It has high diving boards and spray feature and a hot tub inside the building.  It's a great time to go and now that Teddy is no longer afraid of the water or swimming in pools we had so much fun!

Backyard fun
My kids spent a lot of time in our backyard this summer.  Especially after the deck was finished it was a great space to play and burn off energy.  It is a bit of a struggle with Teddy and his AFOs finding shoes that he can wear and easily take on and off for his trampoline bouncing, but we made due the kids had many hours of fun in the backyard.

Sylvan Lake and Gull Lake
Sylvan Lake and Gull Lake are the closest lakes to us.  Neither hold a candle to the lakes I spent my high school years at (Saskatchewan Lakes are still my favourites), but they do the job of finding a place to spend the day at while the kids play in the water and mom gets a chance to read.
